“Festivals & Festa – Performing the Public Space”, 22-23 March 2025

Presenter for International Federation for Theatre Research Asian Theatre Working Group Colloquium #16: Festivals & Festa – Performing the Public Space. Presented my paper Ibong Dayo: Performances of Migration, Ecology, and Sustainability in a Birding Festival. The abstract is as follows:
This paper examines the intersection of performance, migration, ecology, and sustainabilitypractices within the context of a birding festival, focusing on the annual Ibong Dayo Festivalheld in Barangay Pto. Rivas, Bataan, in the Philippines, every end of February. The festival, which celebrates migratory birds, provides a platform for exploring the complex relationshipbetween a community, its environment, and the constant flux of climate its participants areinvolved in. Through looking at the performances and the curation of the festival, this paperinvestigates how the Ibong Dayo Festival functions as a site of cultural exchange, environmentaleducation, and community engagement. By analyzing various performance elements, such asbird watching activities, workshops with members and non-members of the community, andcultural presentations, this paper delves into the ways in which the festival assembles ecologicalawareness, sustainable practices, and cultural heritage into a community’s performative identity.Ultimately, this paper aims to argue the place of the festival in fostering environmentalconsciousness and inciting action towards sustainability in practice and heritage.

IFTR Asian Theatre Working Group 15:
War, Memory, and Theatre in Asia

Presenter for International Federation for Theatre Research Asian Theatre Working Group Colloquium #15: War, Memory, and Theatre in Asia. Presented my paper Response in Reliving - The Reenactment of the Bataan Death March. The abstract is as follows:
Among the nations ravaged during the Second World War was the Philippines. Within the country, none have probably witnessed as much atrocity as the province of Bataan; whereas history had recorded: the Filipino and American soldiers stood their ground in what was known as the Fall of Bataan. What followed after April 9, 1942, came to be known as the Bataan Death March. In commemoration of what took place on that day, the Provincial Government of Bataan stages a re-enactment annually on every 9th of April. The definition of a re-enactment in the West, as an authentic reliving and immersion into particular events in history, has mostly dominated what a re-enactment is. In my presentation, I shall discuss the performance of the Re-enactment of the Bataan Death March held in the Province of Bataan in the Philippines, and how it turns the definition of a re-enactment on its own head, by renegotiating a community’s cultural memory through performance and repertoire. I shall do this by highlighting the unique aspects of the Re-enactment of the Bataan Death March where apart from replaying and redoing, the performance adds festive designs and features to the re-enactment of struggle and determination that Filipino and American soldiers went through during the Fall of Bataan.

A Very Good Artist - Theatre Arts and The Creative Industry

Presenter and Resource Speaker for the UP Diliman College of Arts and Letters' Bahaginan Research Forum 2023: A Very Good Artist. Presented my paper titled Philippine Dramaturgy in the Technoself Age.
The abstract is as follows:
From its earlier conceptions as the intellectual elite of a production, a researcher, and a dramatist, the role of a dramaturg, as it redefines itself, has taken its leaps and bounds throughout the development of Philippine Theater; none more so, than the age we live in: proposed by the author to be the “Technoself Age”. In turn, the paper evaluates, examines, and acknowledges Philippine dramaturgy in the technoself age by looking at select experiences of the author’s recent dramaturgical work which includes plays and productions staged this 2023 such as “Kung Paano Nanalo Sa Karera si Rosang Taba”, “Duyan Ka ng Magiting: Pagpupugay sa mga Bagong Hirang na Pambansang Alagad ng Sining mula sa UP Diliman (UPD)”, “O’Donnell”, and the ongoing 46th season of Dulaang UP - “Sidhi’t Silakbo”.
